Finding Healing Through Harmony

Laura Street, a music teacher at High Notes Avante, shares her journey of using music as a powerful tool for wellness and connection. Here, she talks about the the transformative impact of music on mental health and the growth of a supportive community through High Notes Avante’s programs.

For Laura, music has always been more than just a melody or skill to master. It’s been a lifeline – a way to connect, to heal and to find solace. “I realized that I loved the connection between music and health,” Laura explains, a passion that eventually led her to become a music therapist. Now, as a dedicated teacher at High Notes Avante, she’s using this passion to guide students toward self-discovery and confidence.

Laura’s journey with High Notes Avante began in October 2023 when a colleague introduced her to the organization’s mission: to make music a tool for mental wellness. “When learning about High Notes’ mission, I felt a huge relief,” Laura recalls. “Thank goodness there are people who understand how important music is to one’s health.” Inspired by this alignment of values, Laura joined the team, knowing she could make a difference.

Teaching both group wellness classes and individual voice and guitar lessons, Laura has seen firsthand how music can help students blossom in unexpected ways. One of her students, initially hesitant and shy, gradually found the courage to explore their favorite pop songs, a breakthrough that filled Laura with pride. “You don’t have to be a professional to enjoy music-making. It’s about confidence and joy,” she says.

Laura’s classes cater to individuals touched by mental illness, and her empathy shines through in her teaching philosophy. Guided by the belief that “everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about,” she fosters a safe, inclusive space where students feel seen and supported. Laura’s approach not only helps her students build musical skills but also contributes to their self-esteem and social connections.

Beyond learning an instrument, students discover the broader benefits of music. From newfound confidence to forming meaningful connections, Laura has witnessed the incredible transformation that takes place within her classes. “A lot of students come to realize that they’re not alone in the ups and downs of life,” she explains, as group members share their journeys and encourage one another.

Looking to the future, Laura hopes High Notes Avante’s programs will reach even more people in need. “This charity has such a positive impact, and I’d love to see it expand.” Her message to anyone considering joining? “Please do! Lessons are self-paced, and the teachers are kind and understanding.”

Through her work at High Notes Avante, Laura Street is more than just a teacher; she’s a beacon of hope, helping students find their own harmony amid life’s challenges.
