Yacov’s Story: Playing Ukulele to Cope with Cancer
Yacov (not pictured above, it is a stock photo) first discovered High Notes Avante through Wellspring (a support centre for people living with cancer) when he was navigating one of the most difficult periods of his life. After being diagnosed with cancer, he began experiencing depression and anxiety, feelings that made daily life heavier and more isolating. Looking for a meaningful outlet, he decided to try something completely new, learning the ukulele.

Finding Support Through Music
“I thought ukulele would help,” Yacov shares. “I wanted to feel like I achieved something.” What started as a small step toward healing quickly became something more. Through High Notes Avante’s wellness program, Yacov found not only a creative outlet but also a supportive community led by his instructor, Laura. “The social aspect of meeting the instructor helps,” he explains. “Laura is the best, no pressure and always positive feedback.”
Before each session, Yacov admits he often feels anxious. But that feeling shifts the moment he begins to play. “I feel good during and after,” he says, a simple but powerful reminder of how music can transform emotional states in real time.
Learning, Progress and Small Wins
Despite having no prior musical experience, Yacov challenged himself to learn ukulele, believing it might be the easiest entry point into music. Today, he can play basic chords, something he once thought was impossible. “Playing an instrument is hard, but I feel some achievement… at the beginning I thought I would never be able to do it.”
Even in the face of ongoing health challenges, music continues to offer him moments of relief and progress. “Although I don’t practice enough, I feel like I have achieved something,” he says, highlighting the importance of small wins in recovery and mental wellness.
What keeps him coming back is not just the music, but the sense of connection and growth. “The social aspect and continuing learning & practicing” motivate him to stay engaged.
The Impact of High Notes Avante
Yacov’s story is a powerful example of how programs like High Notes Avante go beyond music, they create safe, encouraging spaces where individuals can rebuild confidence, find purpose, and reconnect with themselves.
For those unsure about joining, Yacov offers honest advice: “I would probably not be able to achieve on my own what I was able to achieve with Laura’s help.”
High Notes Avante is more than a music program, it is a community that supports mental wellness through creativity, compassion, and human connection. Stories like Yacov’s show the tangible impact of this work, and why continued support from donors, partners, and participants is essential to expanding its reach.
