Meet Mary Davis - Piano Teacher at High Notes Avante

“Music isn’t just a skill,” says High Notes Avante’s piano teacher Mary Davis. “It’s a way to heal, to express, to connect. I see it as a journey towards self-discovery and confidence.”

For Mary, High Notes Avante’s motto, ‘Moving Forward on Higher Notes,’ means continual growth—both personally and collectively.

“No matter what’s happened in the past, music allows us to rise,” she reflects. “It symbolizes optimism, resilience and the inner power to reach higher.”

Mary is a classically trained pianist having studied in the UK as well as at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

She started her career as an artistic programmer at Harbourfront Centre and has worked to help others through public awareness initiatives in the mental wellness space.

Then she discovered High Notes Avante—whose mission perfectly aligned with her two lifelong callings: Music and Mental Health advocacy. “What really drew me to Ingrid’s organization was the focus on decreasing stigma around mental health—something I’ve long been passionate about—and the unique way High Notes Avante uses music as a bridge to healing.”

What captivates Mary most about High Notes Avante’s approach is how deeply it prioritizes the individual’s needs. Unlike traditional music schools that often focus heavily on exams, HNA gives students space to learn, explore, and heal through music—at their own pace and comfort level. “We look at where each student is—emotionally and musically—and build from there,” she shares.

“Sometimes practice isn’t perfect, and that’s fine. Maybe a student spent the week listening deeply to something that resonated with them. That, too, is growth.” Another aspect that drew Mary to HNA is the charity’s commitment to accessibility—providing free music lessons to those who might otherwise never get the opportunity. “The cost of music education can be a barrier,” she notes. “High Notes Avante removes that barrier and opens the door for all learners, regardless of background or circumstance.” Mary’s teaching style intertwines empathy, awareness, and creativity. Each lesson becomes a supportive space where students can express themselves freely and explore how music relates to their own emotional landscape. She encourages curiosity: What kind of music resonates most with them? How does it help them through stress or emotional challenges? Can they use the piano not just to learn songs—but to tell their own story? Her approach has led to profound breakthroughs—for instance, helping anxious students rediscover confidence and joy at the piano by turning lessons into safe, non-judgmental spaces.

High Notes Avante appreciates the support we are receiving from participating in Charitable Gaming at Bingo World Richmond Hill, without whose financial support HNA would not exist.

We would also like to acknowledge MusicCounts recent generous contribution of musical instruments that will be included in our instrument lending bank.

Contact us if you or your organization also want to brighten the lives of people with mental health challenges.

We are currently looking for new board members, fundraising volunteers and charitable gaming volunteers!
