You may have seen Rory Shiner on stage at the 2024 High Notes Gala where he sang in the choir at the world premiere of our mental health anthem, We All Have A Story. Since February of 2025, Rory has been working as our Program Coordinator assisting students and teachers in the High Notes Music Program.
Before Rory joined High Notes Avante in 2024, he built a career in public polling at YouGov plc, an international market research and data analytics firm. His work surveying Americans on everyday topics and political issues helped him gain deep insights into people’s perspectives layaing a foundation that enriches his role today.
Rory’s love for exploration has taken him backpacking across ten countries in Europe, with Portugal’s Lisbon and Porto holding a special place in his heart. Looking ahead, he plans to travel across Southeast Asia, fueled by his curiosity about cultures and human experiences. A cinephile who enjoys the latest TV like Westworld and an adventurous foodie, Rory embraces stories and discovery in many forms.
At High Notes Avante, Rory’s role goes far beyond administration. As program coordinator, he carefully screens all applicants to ensure they meet the program’s criteria, making sure each individual is set up for success from the start. His work involves understanding the unique mental health and learning needs of every student, then matching them with the most suitable music teachers in their area, a process that requires empathy, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.
Rory coordinates lesson schedules with teachers, arranges venues for group and piano lessons when needed, and is always on the lookout to expand the network of talented instructors. When an ideal teacher isn’t immediately available, he keeps applicants informed of their options, supporting connection and encouragement. He also contributes to High Notes Avante’s social media presence, helping spread the word about the transformative power of music.
“I see my role as a bridge,” Rory explains. “It’s about connecting people to hope, healing, and community through music. Every student has a story and matching them with the right teacher can be the first step on their healing journey.”
Music and mental health have always been close to Rory’s heart. His father, composer and musician Alan Shiner, collaborated with Ingrid, the founder and executive director of High Notes Avante, to create the organization’s anthem, “We All Have a Story.” This song reflects the charity’s mission to erase stigma and celebrate every person’s path through music and storytelling.
Having seen the impact of music firsthand in people around him living with mental illness. Rory is passionately committed to expanding High Notes Avante’s reach. He dreams of helping more people across Toronto, the GTA, and beyond access this life-changing program.
“Music is a healing mantra,” he says. “Each story matters, and even when things aren’t perfect, we can move forward on higher notes.”
